POSITION OVERVIEW

The Athenian School seeks a compassionate, skilled, and highly organized School Nurse to support the health and well-being of students in grades 6–12 across both the day and boarding programs. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (or designated supervisor), the School Nurse is responsible for the daily management and administration of the Health Services Office and for ensuring a safe, responsive, and student-centered approach to healthcare on campus.

The School Nurse works closely with the Middle School and Upper School Deans of Students, the Athletic Director, Athletic Trainer, and members of the boarding team to support students’ physical and emotional health, facilitate physical readiness for athletics and experiential programming, and promote overall wellness within the school community. This role includes availability during the academic day, coordination of coverage when off campus, and participation in on-call or after-hours support for the boarding program as needed.

In addition to direct student care, the School Nurse oversees health compliance, maintains medical records through the School’s health management system, coordinates vaccination and public health requirements, leads wellness education initiatives, and contributes to campus safety and emergency preparedness planning. There may also be opportunities to participate in other aspects of Athenian’s whole-student program, including student mentoring, outdoor education, or coaching, depending on interest and experience.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

The School Nurse oversees all aspects of Health Services, providing routine care, triage, medication administration, and follow-up planning within the scope of nursing practice and physician standing orders. The Nurse maintains accurate and confidential medical records in accordance with HIPAA and FERPA regulations, manages required health documentation for students, coordinates immunization compliance, and oversees health-related onboarding for new and returning students. The role includes communication with parents, healthcare providers, administrators, and faculty to ensure coordinated and informed care.

This position also promotes preventive care and health education through individual and group interactions, organizes required health and first-aid training for faculty and staff, and collaborates with school leadership on crisis response and emergency operations planning. The School Nurse supports the boarding program through medication distribution, after-hours care as needed, facilitation of medical appointments, and coordination of health protocols. Administrative responsibilities include maintaining supplies and equipment, overseeing budget and inventory controls, and ensuring a welcoming, organized, and confidential Health Services environment.

CORE REQUIREMENTS

Successful candidates are licensed Registered Nurses (RN) in the state of California (required) with experience in adolescent health, school nursing, pediatric, or community health settings preferred. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong clinical judgment, the ability to triage effectively in a dynamic school environment, and comfort responding to emergency medical situations. Experience managing electronic medical records systems and ensuring regulatory compliance is essential.

Athenian provides excellent benefits and salaries are competitive and commensurate with work experience and education. We seek candidates who can start on or before June 15, 2026; the salary range for this role is $95,000-$125,000, depending on experience.

These include, but are not limited to, funded participation in professional conferences and continuing education opportunities. Athenian provides needed training for CPR/AED certification.
