PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Assistant Director of Athletics helps develop and lead a dynamic Middle and Upper School athletics program grounded in Athenian’s commitment to access, equity, and belonging. Working in close partnership with the Director of Athletics, coaches, and colleagues across the school, this person supports a program that prioritizes student participation, growth, and connection and nurtures participation and growth from all athletes. The Assistant Director plays an active role in fostering a culture of inclusion and school spirit, maintaining a visible and engaged presence with student-athletes across seasons.
This role includes coordinating and communicating with coaches, faculty, and staff to support three seasons of interscholastic athletics, along with a robust offering of wellness and physical education programming. The Assistant Director will also teach a section of Middle School PE and coach within the Upper School program, strengthening their connection to students and contributing to the day-to-day life of the campus

They will bring a collaborative spirit, flexibility, and a mission-aligned approach to student growth, along with the initiative and organizational skill needed to support a complex and active program.
The ideal candidate is an educator who values athletics as an important context for adolescent development and community building. They will communicate effectively with students and colleagues, and bring a clear appreciation for working with middle and high school students. A bachelor’s degree (or higher) in physical education, athletics administration, or a related field is preferred, along with 3–5 years of experience coaching and/or supporting athletic programs

Athenian provides excellent benefits and salaries are competitive and commensurate with work experience and education. The salary range for this role is $85,000 - $115,000. Community members enjoy meals on campus and use of athletics facilities, including a pool, gym and fitness center.
All employees participate in school wide professional development, and have the opportunity to pursue a range of additional professional growth opportunities. These include, but are not limited to, funded participation in professional conferences and continuing education opportunities. Athenian provides needed training for CPR/AED certification.
All employees are expected to attend all-school functions relevant to their role and to participate in supporting the student experience with other school duties as requested by their direct supervisor.
